ABSTRACT:
Photonics uniquely interweave with different areas of physics and physical chemistry. Recently, photonics has been used to exploit the interaction between light and molecules, particularly to create the bond between them, forming new hybrid light-matter states with far-reaching consequences for these strongly coupled materials. Even stranger, no “real” light is needed to obtain the effects; it simply appears from the vacuum, creating “something from nothing.” Ultimately, revealing the interplay between light and matter in this new regime opens attractive avenues for various new technologies. This lecture addresses the fundamentals of Strong Coupling: the quantum mechanical foundations, the relevant plasmonic, photonic, and biophotonic structures, and highlights the various applications connecting material physics and chemistry with quantum information, entanglement, nonlinear optics, and chemical reactivity.
