Expression of Interest. Brief description of the institution:
The University of Vigo (UVigo) is a public Spanish university located in Galicia (Northwest Spain). It comprises 3 campuses, the main one in Vigo, where Cinbio (Biomedical Research Center) is located; and two more in Pontevedra (30 Km from Vigo) and Ourense (95 Km from Vigo).
In the last years UVigo has enormously increased its scientific output and its capacity to obtain external resources, being listed in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2011 and 2012. In the last 10 years, UVigo has participated in more than 60 EU research projects totalling more than 25 million euros.
Cinbio has structural and competitive funding and the integrated groups are very active obtaining funds from regional, national and european calls.
Brief description of the Centre:
CINBIO is a multidisciplinary biomedical research centre, undertaking basic and applied research, as well as developing clinical applications; that has been awarded by the Galicia´s Regional Government as Singular Center of Research, “Centro Singular de Investigación de Galicia” 2016-2019. We have new facilities in Vigo, providing a motivating environment, sharing resources and equipment (such as Bioexperimentation facilities -small animals-, cell culture and BSL3 lab, flow cytometry, histology and microscopy labs, genomic and massive proteomic, SPR platforms, phages and microbiology unit, and free software), to produce high quality research; aming at tackling the challenges of society through biomedical research and innovation. To achive our goals we are interacting with hospitals, other universities, related industry, and authorities. This cooperation is paramount for the development of our strategic lines of research.
Our focus is on: Nanoparticles, Colloid, and Organic Chemistry; Immunology; Endocrinology; Neuroscience; Evolutionary and Biomedical Genomics; Molecular Biomakers; Bioactive products from biomass; Biotoxins; Biostatistics and Epidemiology; Bioinformatics and Computer Systems.
Project description:
We offer highly motivated research groups to work with, with deep experience in research, private contracts, collaborations with industry, patents, etc.; and we expect sound proposals, related to our five strategic research areas and three transversal ones:
- CANCER: Molecular Biomarkers; Phylogenomics; Organic Chemistry Synthesis of Antitumoral and Epigenetic targeting drugs;
- IMMUNITY AND INFLAMMATION: Immunology: Vaccines (E. coli, tuberculosis, nano and peptide-based), biosensing (lateral flow, SPR), Autoimmune diseases.
- NEUROSCIENCES: Patch clamp; Neuronal receptors.
- BIOHEALTH AND ACTIVE AGEING: Thermalism; Synthesis of building blocks, antioxidants and prebiotics from biomass.
- OBESITY AND METABOLIC DISEASES: Endocrinology; Role of GLP1: New drugs.
- Transversal areas:
- Novel methods for prevention, diagnosis and therapy in biomedicine. Top notch groups in nanotechnology, and biotoxins (EU Reference Laboratory for Marine Biotoxins).
- Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
- Bioinformatics and Computer Systems
