Spotlight on Ana Campos Ríos
As part of our “Women in Science: Shaping the Future of Science” series, we are pleased to spotlight Ana Campos Ríos, a researcher in the Neurocircuits Group at the CINBIO Research Center.
THE ANSWERS:
Motivation and Origins
“I was torn between philology and biology and had no idea of what biology really was. I’m just interested in how things work, whether it is language or the heart. It ended up being the brain. That vocation can come with time and work. It is not necessary to be the best at anything, being average is perfectly fine”.
Research Work and Social Impact
“Basic science generates knowledge and, in my opinion, that’s the foundation of everything society builds upon. Even when experiments or grant proposals do not go as planned, I handle frustration by talking with colleagues, because challenges become easier when shared, and the best ideas and solutions are never the result of just one person's work”.
Role Models and Mentorship
“I believe my generation did have many female role models, even if they often remained silent, and perhaps that silence encouraged us to change things. I still have a mentor today, and I hope I always will, while also trying to be a mentor for younger researchers myself".
Career Path and Gender Equality
“Balancing personal and family life with the demands of a research career sometimes comes with a little fear and a little guilt, but also with determination and, above all, a great deal of support from the people around me".
Future Vision and Inspiration
“In today's world, a great scientist is not defined only by good ideas, but also by honesty, kindness, hard work, and the hability to work as part of a team. You should be good not only for yourself, but also for others".
