Synthesis of CuO & WO3 nanoparticles via electrochemical method and study of their hydrophobicity properties.

ABSTRACT: There are many different methods for the preparation of nanoparticles. Electrochemical methods are one of the effective ones. This work introduces a simple procedure for the synthesis of CuO nanoparticles from Cu metal plates in the presence of NaOH solution. In this method, black powder of nanoparticles prepared with sizes 13 nm to 30 nm and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The CuO nanoparticles used to coat the polysiloxane surface and the investigation of superhydrophobicity showed high contact angle of 158º -164º. WO3 nanoparticle prepared with the electrochemical method in NaCl solution with sizes between 10 nm and 20 nm. The WO3 nanoparticles were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. The WO3 nanoparticles used to coat the polysiloxane surface and the investigation of superhydrophobicity showed high contact angle of 157º -161º.

Experimental and theoretical studies of structural, electronic and magnetic properties of RE2NiCrO6 (RE= Ce, Pr and Nd) double perovskites.

ABSTRACT: The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the double perovskites RE2NiCrO6 (RE = Ce, Pr and Nd) have been investigated using experimental route and density functional theory (DFT) approach. The hydrothermal method was used for the synthesis process. XRD results confirm the orthorhombic structure of the studied compounds. SEM images show that well shaped particles are formed while EDS mapping confirms the existence of Ce, Pr, Nd, Ni, Cr, and O with the appropriate compositions. For DFT calculations we have used full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method implemented in the WIEN2k code. The spin polarized electronic structures and density of states results revealed the half metallic nature of compounds. The spins states show the ferromagnetic coupling between the Ni and Cr ions. The hysteresis curves of all the compounds also confirm the ferromagnetic nature. The calculated values of magnetic saturation for RE2NiCrO6 (RE = Ce, Pr and Nd) double perovskite oxides were found to be 5.96 emu/g, 7.93 emu/g and 9.95 emu/g respectively The half-metallic nature and suitable values of magnetic saturation demonstrate that RE2NiCrO6 (RE = Ce, Pr and Nd) double perovskite oxides are suitable for spintronic applications.
