Tito da charla:  “Basic principles of photonic design at nanoscale for biomedicine applications

The development of new sources of light has changed completely how we understand treatment, diagnosis and research in current biomedicine. In fact, light is already a well-established clean and precise surgery tool. A fantastic example is the 2018 Novel Prize in Physics, awarded to Arthur Ashkin, Donna Strickland and Gérard Mourou for their ground-breaking inventions in the field of laser physics. During their research they established the fundamentals of advanced precision light instruments which have revolutionized areas as medical surgery or precise manipulation of living cells by light.

However, the medicine of the future requires going further. The medicine of the future requires the development of light driven scalpels with nanoscale precision. This nanoscale precision can be achieved using nanophotonics, just taking advantage of the developments done by photonic technologies to processing light at nanoscale. During this seminar I will explain basic principles of photonic design at nanoscale. I will explain what is light and how it’s fascinating wave-particle duality can be used to control and design nanoactuators which can be used in biomedicine.  This will be an open seminar for people with different backgrounds, therefore I will just play with basic principles to understand how we can manipulate light at nanoscale.

Finally, I would like to finish, showing not only how biomedicine can take advantages of photonic technologies. I would like to show how going deeper in multidisciplinary research can fuel physicists to explore new fundamentals for quantum technologies inspired by biology and biomedicine.
