ABSTRACT: Condensed matter physics is uniquely geared toward developing new-generation technology. In
complex quantum materials, those that depart from quasi-free electron descriptions, unique macroscopic
properties emerge. Controlling them, with technological applications in mind, has traditionally been realized by chemical approaches or extreme environments (high pressure, large magnetic fields,...). Developments in pulsed laser sources enable a new, reversible, and tunable mechanism to engineer emergence in quantum materials over many energy and length scales. In this talk, I will introduce the overarching ideas behind light-induced control of emergent phases of matter in a few well-studied material families.
