ABSTRACT:

Synchrotron light: opportunities for physics, chemistry and materials science

A. Longo1

  1. European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, France

In-situ or operando synchrotron X-ray techniques are currently used to understand the fundamental mechanism and guide not only the materials design protocols but the technological optimization as well, in all classes of functional materials.

The merits of synchrotron X-rays, like high brightness (1012 times more intense than laboratory sources), collimation and energy tunability, make them ideal for diverse applications to study materials spanning energy storage and conversion, magnetism, catalysis, optoelectronics, etc. The synchrotron beam allows the implementation of sophisticated techniques involving high temporal resolution (down to milliseconds) of physicochemical processes.

In this seminar, after a brief introduction highlighting the EBS upgrade at ESRF, exemplifying case studies will be discussed, involving combined information from X-ray diffraction, X-ray Raman scattering, X-ray absorption with the use of microbeams: in situ and operando investigations of electrocatalytical systems, and  studies of materials for energy storage and conversion.

BIO:

Alessandro Longo at the moment is second scientist at ID20 and senior research at the ISMN-CNR in Italy. He earned his BS at the Faculty of Science in Palermo University in 1995  at the physics and chemistry department with a thesis on the autocorrelation functions for X-ray scattering and their application in metal clusters characterization. In the 1998, in the same department He received his Ph.D. (in Chemistry) from the University of Palermo. He spent the PhD period (1995-1998) at GILDA beamline at ESRF, where he studied fundamental and applied aspects of nanostructured metal clusters for conversion and energy storage application by using XRD and XAFS spectroscopy. Immediately after,  he spent three years at Gilda Beamline  as a postdoctoral research granted by the National Physics Institute of the Material (INFM)  and National Italian Council Research (CNR). In the 2000 He got the researcher position at Institute of Structured Nanomaterial (ISMN-CNR)  at the CNR where he started working on the defective structure of doped oxides used for fuel cell applications and semiconductors for solar water purification.

From there he moved to Paris, France as a visiting scientist researcher associate at the Chemical Theory and Modelling Group at the ENSCP (Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie de Paris) where he studied, together with Prof. Carlo Adamo,  functionals for DFT calculations to simulate electronic structure of defective oxides. In 2009 He joined the CRG DUBBLE bm26 at ESRF where he was the responsible for the Dutch users community addressing practical problems in large scale energy conversion and storage. In the 2019, after the Dutch step out for DUBBLE project, He moved to LCT of Gent University as visiting scientist  and during this period he started a close collaboration with Dr. Christoph Sahle at ID20 first as visiting scientist  and now as second scientist.

Currently, Alessandro's interest is mainly concentrated on the structural characterization with Synchrotron based techniques for materials applied for Energy Storage and Conversion.

Alessandro has authored and co-authored more than 208 scientific contributions in peer-reviewed journals that have been cited more than 4546 times (h-index 42 (scholar) ) and presented more than 25 invited talks at international conferences and meetings.
