Programa Seminar Programme

O xoves 8 de maio de 2025, Dr. Leonardo de Souza Mesquita (Principal Investigator of the project “Sustainable Innovations: The Biorefinery Revolution via Macroalgae Valorization Using Renewable Solvents towards a Green/Blue Economy” at University of São Paulo) ofrecerá o seminario “Sustainable Extraction of Bioactive Metabolites Using Eutectic Solvents: Applications for Health " dentro do ciclo CINBIO Seminar Programme.

Será ás 11:00 horas na Sala de seminarios de Torre CACTI.

ABSTRACT:

Conventional extraction methods often rely on toxic solvents and energy-intensive processes, limiting their sustainability and applicability in health-related sectors. Eutectic solvents (ES), particularly natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), have emerged as a green and efficient alternative for extracting bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and polysaccharides from a variety of resources. These metabolites exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, making them valuable for functional foods, nutraceuticals, and skincare formulations. This lecture will explore the principles of eutectic solvent-based extraction, highlighting its advantages over traditional methods, and discuss the impact of bioactive compounds on health and sustainability. By integrating green extraction technologies into biomass biorefineries, we can enhance the circular economy and promote the development of eco-friendly bio-based products.

BIO:

Dr. Leonardo de Souza Mesquita is a biologist with a strong academic background in applied botany and biotechnology. He holds a Master’s and Ph.D. in Sciences, specializing in biodiversity and interdisciplinary health sciences. Currently, he serves as the Principal Investigator of the project “Sustainable Innovations: The Biorefinery Revolution via Macroalgae Valorization Using Renewable Solvents towards a Green/Blue Economy” at University of São Paulo (USP). His research focuses on the sustainable extraction of bioactive compounds from plant, macroalgae, and food matrices, with an emphasis on integrating extraction and analytical techniques to obtain biologically active and safe extracts. He specializes in alternative, non-volatile biobased solvents, including ionic liquids, eutectic solvents, edible oils, and surfactants, which are key to developing innovative bioproduct formulations. His expertise spans high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry, alternative biomolecule purification, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular biology.
