Programa Seminar Programme

O xoves 5 de decembro de 2024, a Dr. Marta Varela Rey (Gene Regulatory Control in Liver Disease Laboratory, Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases - CiMUS and University of Santiago de Compostela - USC), ofrecerá o seminario “Hepatic levels of S-adenosylmethionine regulate the adaptive response to fasting" dentro do ciclo CINBIO Seminar Programme.

Será ás 12:00 horas na Sala de Seminarios da Torre CACTI.

ABSTRACT:

There has been an intense focus to uncover the molecular mechanisms by which fasting triggers the adaptive cellular responses in the major organs of the body. We show that in mice, hepatic S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe)—the principal methyl donor—acts as a metabolic sensor of nutrition to fine-tune the catabolic-fasting response. Importantly, during fasting, hepatic SAMe produced at MAMs fine-tunes ER-mitochondria contacts and beta-oxidation and prevents ER stress and liver damage. In sum, our work provides important insights into the previously undescribed function of SAMe as a new arm of the metabolic adaptation to fasting.

BIO:

My research career has been dedicated to understanding liver disorders, in particular molecular mechanisms involved in tumour progression, steatosis, fibrosis, as well as hepatic metabolism, first as a PhD student with Prof. M. Iraburu (UNAV, 1996-2001), and then as post-doc with Prof. J.M. Mato (UNAV, 2001-04) and with Prof. A. Warner at the University College London (2004-07). After 3 years at UCL, from 2007-20, I joined the laboratory of Dr. ML Martínez-Chantar and Dr. J.M. Mato at CIC bioGUNE as a senior investigator CIBERehd. Finally in 2020, I joined CiMUS at the Universidad of Santiago de Compostela as a principal investigator.
