Research is at the core of everything we do at CINBIO.

CINBIO is the locus of research for collaborative groups of investigators pushing the frontiers of knowledge forward. We integrate several research groups with diverse but overlapping scientific interests. It brings together experienced researcher to materialise on the synergism of inter/multidisciplinary collaboration, while mentoring young investigators. Top level researchers cooperate in a common framework about medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and information technology.

CINBIO is a research Center that houses more than 200 scientists, engineers, technicians, students and support personnel. The creation of CINBIO shows a commitment of the Universidade de Vigo to basic and applied research in the topical areas of biomedicine, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

The activities at CINBIO are structured around four large thematic areas of research related to biomedicine and biotechnology:

- Molecular medicine (MMED) is a broad field that focuses on the molecular foundations of diverse conditions (including rare diseases), immune response, and neuroscience and that bridges laboratory science and clinical applications. Our aim is to develop diagnostic and treatment methods and/or identify mechanisms to activate or deactivate diseases.

- Nutrition and well-being area (HEALTH) fully explore the relationships between nutrition and environment and human health; specially we focus on nutritional disorders, obesity and metabolism; and the microbiome (with the acquisition of antioxidants and the development of prebiotics), bacteria, toxins and therapeutic agents.

- Nanomaterials and nanotechnology (NANO): We provide the infrastructure for the development and research on nanoscale materials which is structured around nanocatalysis, biosensors, nanophotonics, nanomagnetism and nanovaccines.

- Biostatistics and Information technology (COMP) for health produces predictive models used for inference in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology, as well as the use of software for the management of such data.

Our fundamental objective is to have a multiplier effect on society and give back highly specialised professionals, scientific knowledge, and transference. To solidify the future of our research, CINBIO endeavours to light the spark of creativity in up-and-coming researchers and attract the talent of established experts in highly technical fields. With this goal in mind, the mission of CINBIO includes the reinforcement of the interest of young researchers, increasing the number of postgraduate students with training in the field of R&D&i, promoting the development of highly competitive researchers and motivating postgraduates to continue their research career and obtain a PhD. The aim of this programme is to encourage EARLY-STAGE RESEARCHERS to achieve a PhD and to help them to improve their research-related skills and competencies within a doctoral programme in a collaborative, multidisciplinary and high-competence research environment.
